  • EHS and AMMS Students Learn About ‘Nanoscience’

Sparks flew Tuesday at Admiral Moorer Middle School when Martin Bakker, Ph.D. visited the school fo r demonstrations in nanoscience.
Bakker, associate professor of chemistry at the University of Alabama, showed students in Brenda O’Neal’s 6th grade class how to create sparks by rubbing a metal striker along a length of sandpaper and make iron dust glow brilliantly when sprinkled on a hot plate.
But the kids weren’t just learning about nanoscience – they were learning how much fun science can be. That is a major goal of Bakker’s and his program, which is co-funded by the University of Alabama and the National Science Foundation.
“Our job is to train the next generation of scientists,” said Bakker. “(And) the best way to get kids excited about science is to actually let them do science.”
But the program has a third part as well: to spark new ideas for the university faculty taking part in the experiments.
  • Eufaula Elementary Programs Encourage Parental Involvement

Eufaula Elementary School is receiving numerous visits from the “FBI” this year, but that’s a good thing.
Two new parent groups have formed at EES called Fathers Being Involved (FBI) and Mothers In Action (MIA).
Principal Reeivice Girtman says that parental involvement is key to a child’s development - both academically and socially.
A presentation he made to several fathers this semester showed that kids whose parents aren’t involved in their lives are twice as likely to drop out of school. They are 11 times more likely to exhibit violent behavior.
Ninety-two percent of girls who lack a prominent father figure in their lives are more likely to dissolve their own marriages later in life, and 75 percent of children who lack parental involvement in their lives end up in substance abuse centers as adults.
Twenty dads attended that initial meeting of the FBI. Many other dads also expressed interested in “getting involved” but couldn’t make the meeting time.
